Promoter Information for 2010 Tour of Restraints and Passages

Two Unique Performances ~ One Soulful Evening

Restraints and Passages are rooted in the approach of Grotowski's Teatr Laboratorium of Poland, particularly the work of one of its principal members, Zbigniew Cynkutis. Both share a commitment to the psycho-physical process of the actor as the genesis for image-based performances. Study and experience of this visceral, actor-based training and performance over several decades has brought together these three theatre artists from the US, Poland, and India for this unique tour. Relying on minimal props, lighting, and scenography, these enlivening works are suited for a studio theatre or black box performance space.

Diane has trained and performed with Boston's most innovative experimental theatre companies; Stage One Theatre Lab, Boston (1975-78), and Double Edge Theatre (1989-92). With Double Edge Theatre she performed the role of Bruno Schultz in their acclaimed production "Song of Absence". The company received numerous awards for this piece including "Best Experimental Theater", "Best Ensemble" etc., in the Boston Globe, the Boston Herald, the Boston Phoenix and the New England Monthly. In her alternative theatre work, she has been greatly influenced by the approach of Jerzy Grotowski, and the work of Zbigniew Cynkutis a leading member of the Polish Theater Lab. This kind of theatre relies upon the actor to create its startling images. It is a physical, gutsy and often a stunningly bizarre style of theatre. After studying with Cynkutis in 1984 she continued to look for ways to integrate this work, in 2006 premiering the work RESTRAINTS . In this work she was aided by Jola Cynkutis An actress and director herself, Jola was trained by her husband, Zbigniew Cynkutis, a founding member of the Polish Theatre Lab.
