In June 2001, Diane Edgecomb along with musical collaborator Margot Chamberlain created In the Groves an annual storytelling concert for the paths and groves of Boston’s 265 acre Arnold Arboretum home to North America’s premiere collection of hardy trees, shrubs and vines.  Throughout the two hour concert stroll, audience members gather for tales in Maple, Cherry, Ash and Hemlock groves. Stories from Japan, Czechoslovakia, Britain, Australia and North America are surrounded with songs and music from the cultures represented.

“It is true that we need the land, but that is not the whole story; for the land also needs the people. It needs to feel the pounding of our feet to the rhythm of the dance, needs to hear the laughter of our children and it needs to hear the ancient stories told in a sacred manner.”
-saying of native people of Central Australia

Twin Ariadne’s guide Boston commuters into the new Millennium

In this Living Myth event created for the Millennium in Boston, the subway system is compared to the Cretan labyrinth from the myth of Theseus and the Minotaur.  Our frenetic killing pace, embodied in the train, is the fearsome Minotaur monster we must defeat. All this takes place quite appropriately in Boston, the Athens of America.  As Athenians we look forward to First Night 2001 when Athena will descend to Back Bay station and gather our hopes, dreams and wishes for the new Millennium and carry them to the future.
